Abstract

ABSTRAK Faras Malik Abdullah, “Simbol-Simbol Sosial Dalam Novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma Karya Naguib Mahfouz: Kajian Semiotika Roland Barthes”. Skripsi, Jakarta: Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Arab Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Negeri Jakarta, 2026. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji simbol-simbol sosial dalam novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma karya Naguib Mahfouz dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam kajian sastra dan menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif-analitis berbasis studi kepustakaan, dengan fokus pada pengungkapan makna sosial yang terkandung dalam teks sastra melalui sistem tanda dan simbol. Data penelitian berupa kutipan-kutipan teks dari novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma yang memuat simbol-simbol sosial, baik yang muncul dalam alur peristiwa, dialog antar tokoh, maupun penggambaran kondisi sosial masyarakat di setiap negeri yang dikunjungi tokoh utama. Data dikumpulkan melalui teknik pembacaan mendalam dan pencatatan sistematis terhadap keseluruhan teks novel, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teori semiotika Roland Barthes yang meliputi tiga tingkat pemaknaan, yaitu makna denotatif, makna konotatif, dan tingkat mitos. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma ditemukan sebanyak 173 simbol sosial yang tersebar dalam seluruh struktur naratif. Simbol-simbol tersebut secara umum berfokus pada empat aspek utama, yaitu simbol sosial budaya, sosial keagamaan, sosial moral, dan sosial politik. Simbol-simbol ini tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai unsur estetis dalam narasi, tetapi juga merepresentasikan realitas sosial, relasi kekuasaan, nilai-nilai moral, praktik keagamaan, serta dinamika kebebasan dan kontrol dalam masyarakat. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes efektif dalam mengungkap makna simbol sosial dalam novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma, sekaligus menunjukkan bahwa novel ini merupakan bentuk kritik sosial simbolik terhadap berbagai sistem sosial dan pencarian manusia akan kebenaran dan kesempurnaan hidup. This study aims to examine social symbols in the novel Rihlat Ibn Fattouma by Naguib Mahfouz using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This research belongs to the field of literary studies and employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method based on library research, focusing on uncovering the social meanings embedded in the symbols presented in the literary text. The research data consist of textual excerpts from the novel that contain social symbols, whether manifested through narrative events, dialogues between characters, or depictions of social conditions in the societies visited by the protagonist. Data were collected through close reading and systematic note-taking of the entire novel and subsequently analyzed based on Barthes’ semiotic theory, which comprises three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that a total of 173 social symbols are identified throughout the narrative structure of the novel, primarily concentrated in four main aspects: socio-cultural, socio-religious, socio-moral, and socio-political symbols. At the denotative level, these symbols reflect Ibn Fattouma’s journey from one society to another within the narrative framework. At the connotative level, they reveal variations in values, social systems, and ideological perspectives. At the level of myth, the social symbols articulate a critique of concepts presented as absolute truths, such as freedom, religion, and the ideal political system. Therefore, this study confirms that Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach is effective in revealing the symbolic structure of modern Arabic novels, and that Rihlat Ibn Fattouma is not merely a work of literary fiction but also a medium of social and intellectual critique that reflects the complexity of human experience and the continuous human pursuit of meaning and perfection.
