Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the naming system of leadership titles within the traditional governance of the Muna tribal community through an anthroponymic perspective, identifying the meanings, functions, and symbolic structures embedded in each customary leadership title. A qualitative approach was employed using Spradley's ethnographic model. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies involving traditional leaders, customary officeholders, and community members knowledgeable about the Muna traditional governance system. Data analysis followed Spradley's four analytical stages domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis supported by Atlas.ti software to map conceptual interrelationships. The findings reveal that titles such as Sugi, Sangia, Omputo, Bhonto Balano, Ghoerano, Bobato, Kino, Mieno, Modino, Kapita, Kapitalao, Opasi, Tunani, and Firisi are not merely administrative markers, but symbolic constructions representing power structures, customary legitimacy, moral values, spirituality, and social stratification. One central cultural theme was identified: the hierarchical structure of leadership as a representation of equilibrium among political power, customary authority, and spiritual legitimacy. This theme is supported by four sub-themes: the division of power among three social classes (Kaomu, Walaka, and Sara), the integration of administrative and customary authority, the symbolism of leadership titles, and a collective and layered leadership system. The study concludes that Muna leadership is constructed through a collective, hierarchical, and symbolically rich role distribution mechanism. These findings align with Alford and Van Langendonck's anthroponymic theory and Frawley's framework of meaning. This research is expected to contribute to the advancement of anthroponymy studies, cultural anthropology, and the preservation of Muna cultural heritage through books and digital platforms.
