Abstract

***** This study aims to analyze the effect of smartphone use, sleep disturbance, and physical activity on learning outcomes, as well as to examine the mediating role of physical activity among grade XI students of SMAS Kosgoro Kota Bogor. The study employed an associative quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) analysis with SmartPLS software. The sample consisted of 76 students drawn from 324 grade XI students, determined using the Slovin formula with a stratified purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through the Smartphone Addiction Scale–Short Version (SAS-SV), the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-Short), while learning outcomes were measured using documented report-card grades. The testing of seven hypotheses showed that all hypotheses were accepted. Smartphone use had a significant negative effect on learning outcomes (β = −0.245; p = 0.006), whereas sleep disturbance (β = 0.214; p = 0.032) and physical activity (β = 0.387; p = 0.000) had significant effects on learning outcomes. Smartphone use (β = 0.428; p = 0.000) and sleep disturbance (β = 0.316; p = 0.001) had significant positive effects on physical activity. Physical activity significantly mediated the effects of smartphone use (indirect effect = 0.166; p = 0.004) and sleep disturbance (indirect effect = 0.122; p = 0.026) on learning outcomes. The model met an acceptable fit criterion (SRMR = 0.099). The main findings underscore the importance of sleep hygiene as an academic determinant and indicate that smartphone use does not necessarily displace physical activity, making them relevant to the development of Physical Education in the digital era. Keywords: smartphone use, sleep disturbance, physical activity, learning outcomes, SEM-PLS, Path Analysis.
