Abstract

Kata kunci: CFRP, adhesive bonding, copper interlayer, mechanical interlocking, single lap joint, scarf joint, uji geser.*****This study aims to analyze the effect of joint geometry variation and the mechanical interlocking method using a copper interlayer (Cu) on the mechanical properties of adhesive-bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) joints. The material used was woven twill carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy laminate bonded with Araldite® 2015 structural adhesive. The joint configurations consisted of Single Lap Joint (SLJ) and Scarf Joint (SJ), each with three treatment variations: without an interlayer (TI), with a copper interlayer (IT), and with an anchored copper interlayer (AIT). The copper interlayer was modified into a protruding triangular (spiked) pattern inspired by a bio-inspired mechanical interlocking concept, utilizing an anchoring mechanism analogous to plant root systems. Tensile testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM D5868, while failure mode analysis followed ASTM D5573. The experimental data were evaluated based on maximum tensile stress, strain, elastic modulus, and joint fracture characteristics. The results indicate that both joint geometry and the mechanical interlocking method significantly influence the mechanical performance of CFRP adhesive joints. The Scarf Joint configuration provided a more uniform stress distribution and exhibited superior performance compared with the Single Lap Joint configuration. The use of the modified copper interlayer enhanced the anchoring effect between the adhesive and the CFRP surface, thereby improving load transfer across the bonded interface. The best performance was achieved by the SJ-AIT configuration, which exhibited an average shear stress of 14.79 MPa, a strain of 2.35%, and an elastic modulus of 1714.54 MPa. These findings demonstrate that the combination of the Scarf Joint geometry and bio-inspired mechanical interlocking using a modified copper interlayer is an effective approach for improving the strength and reliability of CFRP adhesive joints and has strong potential as an alternative joint design for composite structural applications. Keywords: CFRP, adhesive bonding, copper interlayer, mechanical interlocking, single lap joint, scarf joint, shear test.
