Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkonstruk krisis moneter dalam tajuk rencana Harian Kompas tahun 197-1998. Penelitian ini membahas tentang posisi harian Kompas pada masa Orde Baru dan dinamika pers menjelang reformasi, serta mengkonstruksi wacana krisis moneter dalam tajuk rencana Harian Kompas. Dalam proses penelitian digunakan metode historis dengan pendekatan deskriptif-analitis, melalui tahapan heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi dan penulisan sejarah. Kerangka analisis penelitian ini memanfaatkan teori framing sebagai landasan analisis terkait konstruksi krisis moneter dalam tajuk rencana Harian Kompas tahun 1997-1998. Penelitian ini menggunakan sumber primer berupa tajuk rencana Harian Kompas dari bulan Juli tahun 1997 hingga bulan Mei tahun 1998. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketika mengkonstruk narasi krisis moneter dalam tajuk rencananya, Kompas menyampaikan kritiknya secara bertahap dan semakin tegas seiring lemahnya pengaruh Orde Baru, terlebih lagi, kritiknya semakin berani setelah masa Orde Baru berakhir pada Mei 1998. Namun, kritik yang dilontarkan tetap sopan, sesuai dengan falsafahnya dengan menerapkan teknik “jurnalisme kepiting” agar dapat bertahan di masa Orde Baru. ***** This study aims to examine the discursive construction of the 1997–1998 monetary crisis in the editorials of Kompas Daily. It discusses the position of Kompas during the New Order era and the dynamics of the Indonesian press in the period leading up to the Reformasi movement, as well as analyzes how the newspaper constructed the discourse surrounding the monetary crisis through its editorials. This research employs the historical method with a descriptive-analytical approach, consisting of the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historical writing. The analytical framework is based on framing theory, which serves as the foundation for examining the construction of the monetary crisis discourse in Kompas editorials published between 1997 and 1998. The primary sources consist of Kompas editorials published from July 1997 to May 1998. The findings reveal that in constructing its narrative of the monetary crisis, Kompas expressed its criticism gradually and with increasing firmness as the influence of the New Order regime weakened. Moreover, its criticism became more explicit following the collapse of the New Order in May 1998. Nevertheless, the newspaper consistently maintained a polite and measured tone, in accordance with its editorial philosophy, by employing the technique commonly referred to as "crab journalism" (jurnalisme kepiting), which enabled it to survive under the constraints imposed by the New Order regime.
