Abstract

***** This study aims to analyze the social practices of generation Z cat sitters in developing self control strategies as a form of adaptation to the platform-based gig economy structure, as well as to examine the relationship between platforms, clients, and workers in shaping self control practices to achieve work-life balance. This research is motivated by the rapid development of flexible work systems based on digital platforms that offer work autonomy while simultaneously creating schedule uncertainty, performance pressure, and blurred boundaries between work and personal life. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, limited participatory observation, and digital documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling techniques, consisting of generation Z cat sitters, representatives of Cat Sitter Indonesia management, and clients as supporting informants. This study applies the concepts of gig economy, precariat theory, self control, boundary management, and work life balance to analyze workers’ experiences in dealing with the dynamics of flexible work in the digital economy era. The findings reveal that work flexibility in the gig economy does not always create freedom, but also generates work pressure, unclear working hours, and demands for constant responsiveness toward clients and digital platforms. In response to these conditions, Generation Z cat sitters develop various self-control strategies through work schedule management, limiting the number of tasks, managing communication with clients, selecting work locations, and allocating personal time as forms of boundary management. The relationship between platforms, clients, and workers shapes self control practices as a social adaptation strategy to maintain work life balance amid flexible yet vulnerable working conditions. This study concludes that work life balance among Generation Z cat sitters is not automatically achieved through work flexibility, but is continuously negotiated through self control practices within the structure of the platform based gig economy.
