Abstract
***** The Eid tradition is one of the cultural practices most closely associated with the Betawi community in Duri Kosambi, West Jakarta; it is observed for seven consecutive days based on the principle of reciprocal visits between families and neighbourhoods. The continuity of this tradition depends on the younger generation, not only as practitioners but also as the custodians of knowledge regarding the tradition. This study aims to understand the participation of and interpretations of the Betawi youth regarding the Eid al-Fitr tradition, as well as to analyse how their knowledge of this tradition is formed. This study employs a qualitative approach using phenomenological methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation and a literature review involving seven informants aged 16–30 from Betawi families in Duri Kosambi, plus two informants from an older generation for comparison. Data analysis utilised Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s framework of social construction, which encompasses externalisation, objectification and internalisation, with a focus on the formation of knowledge. The research findings indicate that the younger generation actively participates in this tradition, from the preparations, ‘ngider’, ‘nerima tamu’, ‘nyorog’, to ‘ngored’, with the intensity of their participation influenced by kinship ties, personality, and family background. This tradition is interpreted across three dimensions: social, religious and cultural. From a social constructionist perspective, it was found that the stock of knowledge regarding the Eid al-Fitr tradition had already been passed down to the younger generation before their participation, and it is this knowledge that shapes and guides the system of role typification and the actions they carry out. This knowledge is subsequently internalised, becoming knowledge that is taken for granted whilst also forming part of the identity of the Betawi community in Duri Kosambi.
