Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji proses terbentuknya identitas ideologi Gerakan Mahasiswa Nasional Indonesia (GMNI) dalam rentang waktu 1953–1973. Kajian ini berangkat dari kenyataan bahwa GMNI tidak hanya lahir sebagai hasil penyatuan organisasi mahasiswa nasionalis, tetapi juga berkembang menjadi organisasi yang memiliki identitas ideologi yang khas. Pembentukan identitas tersebut berlangsung dalam dinamika politik Indonesia sejak masa Demokrasi Liberal, Demokrasi Terpimpin, hingga awal Orde Baru. Sebagai organisasi yang berlandaskan Marhaenisme, GMNI memiliki hubungan historis yang erat dengan pemikiran Soekarno dan Partai Nasional Indonesia (PNI). Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan proses fusi organisasi mahasiswa yang melahirkan GMNI pada tahun 1953–1954, mengkaji pengaruh pemikiran Soekarno terhadap arah perjuangan organisasi, serta menganalisis hubungan GMNI dengan PNI dan dampak kebijakan fusi partai politik tahun 1973 terhadap identitas ideologinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode historis yang terdiri atas empat tahapan, yaitu heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Tahap heuristik dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan sumber primer dan sekunder yang berkaitan dengan sejarah GMNI, Marhaenisme, dan pemikiran Soekarno. Selanjutnya, sumber-sumber tersebut diverifikasi melalui kritik eksternal dan internal, kemudian ditafsirkan menggunakan Teori Identitas Sosial, Teori Strukturasi, dan Teori Hubungan Antarkelompok. Hasil penelitian kemudian disusun dalam bentuk narasi sejarah yang sistematis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa GMNI lahir dari proses penyatuan tiga organisasi mahasiswa nasionalis yang memiliki kesamaan orientasi perjuangan. Fusi pada tahun 1953–1954 tidak hanya menghasilkan organisasi baru secara administratif, tetapi juga membentuk identitas kolektif yang berlandaskan Marhaenisme. Dalam perkembangannya, GMNI menjadikan ajaran Trisila Soekarno, yaitu Sosio-nasionalisme, Sosio-demokrasi, dan Ketuhanan yang Berkebudayaan, sebagai dasar ideologi organisasi. Hubungan GMNI dengan PNI turut memperkuat proses konsolidasi organisasi pada masa Demokrasi Liberal dan Demokrasi Terpimpin. Namun, perubahan politik pada masa Orde Baru dan kebijakan fusi partai politik tahun 1973 mengakhiri hubungan organisatoris antara GMNI dan PNI. Meskipun demikian, identitas ideologis GMNI tetap bertahan karena nilai-nilai Marhaenisme terus dipertahankan sebagai dasar perjuangan organisasi. ***** This study examines the process of the ideological identity formation of the Indonesian National Student Movement (GMNI) during the period of 1953 1973. The study is based on the fact that GMNI was not only established through the merger of several nationalist student organizations but also developed into an organization with a distinct ideological identity. This process took place amid Indonesia’s political developments during the Liberal Democracy period, the Guided Democracy era, and the early years of the New Order. As an organization based on Marhaenism, GMNI had a close historical relationship with the ideas of Soekarno and the Indonesian National Party (PNI). Therefore, this research aims to explain the fusion process that led to the establishment of GMNI in 1953 1954, examine the influence of Soekarno’s ideas on the organization’s direction, and analyze the relationship between GMNI and PNI as well as the impact of the 1973 political party fusion policy on GMNI’s ideological identity. This research uses the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The heuristic stage involved collecting primary and secondary sources related to the history of GMNI, Marhaenism, and Soekarno’s ideas. The sources were then verified through external and internal criticism before being interpreted using Social Identity Theory, Structuration Theory, and Intergroup Relations Theory. The findings were then organized into a systematic historical narrative. The results show that GMNI emerged from the merger of three nationalist student organizations that shared similar goals and orientations. The fusion process in 1953–1954 not only created a new organization administratively but also formed a collective identity based on Marhaenism. In its development, GMNI adopted Soekarno’s Trisila doctrine—Socio-Nationalism, Socio Democracy, and Cultural Divinity—as the ideological foundation of the organization. The relationship between GMNI and PNI also strengthened the organization’s consolidation during the Liberal Democracy and Guided Democracy periods. However, political changes during the New Order and the implementation of the 1973 political party fusion policy ended the organizational relationship between GMNI and PNI. Nevertheless, GMNI’s ideological identity remained strong because Marhaenist values continued to serve as the foundation of the organization’s struggle.
