Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan mengenai konflik internal yang terjadi di HKBP pada tahun 1962-1964. Terjadinya konflik internal HKBP pada tahun 1962-1964 disebabkan oleh ketidakpuasan pendeta dan anggota jemaat terhadap era kepemimpinan Ephorus Pdt. T.S. Sihombing. Konflik ini berlangsung sejak tahun 1962 dengan dilaksanakannya Sinode Godang HKBP 1962 sampai dengan tahun 1964 dengan berdirinya GKPI pada tanggal 30 Agustus 1964. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode historis dengan pendekatan deskriptif-naratif. Sumber utama yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini antara lain adalah buku Tuhan Menyertai Umatnya: Garis Besar Sejarah 125 Tahun Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP), buku Yubileum 50 Tahun GKPI (Gereja Kristen Protestan Indonesia: Tinjauan Sejarah dan Pandangan ke Depan, Kertas Kerja Sinode Godang HKBP 1964, buku-buku relevan lainnya dan juga artikel-artikel ilmiah. Penelitian ini menjelaskan mengenai bagaimana keputusan yang dilakukan oleh Ephorus sebagai pemimpin tertinggi HKBP sangat berpengaruh terhadap keharmonisan di lingkungan HKBP. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keputusan Pdt. T.S. Sihombing dengan mengubah tata gereja HKBP menyebabkan ketidakpuasan beberapa pendeta terhadap kepemimpinan Pdt. T.S. Sihombing. Kebijakan yang diambil oleh T.S. Sihombing dengan memecat pendeta yang tidak setuju dengan keputusannya menyebabkan konflik semakin memburuk. Intervensi pemerintah Sumatra Utara untuk membantu menyelesaikan masalah justru menyebabkan kelompok-kelompok yang tidak setuju dengan kepemimpinan Pdt. T.S. Sihombing mengeluarkan diri dari keanggotaan HKBP dan mendirikan gereja baru bernama Gereja Kristen Protestan Indonesia (GKPI).***** This study aims to explain the internal conflict that occurred within the HKBP from 1962 to 1964. The internal conflict within the HKBP during this period was caused by dissatisfaction among pastors and congregation members with the leadership of Ephorus Rev. T.S. Sihombing. This conflict lasted from 1962, with the convening of the 1962 HKBP Grand Synod, until 1964, with the establishment of the GKPI on August 30, 1964. This study employs a historical method with a descriptive-narrative approach. The primary sources used in this study include the book Tuhan Menyertai Umatnya: Garis Besar Sejarah 125 Tahun Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP), the book Yubileum 50 Tahun GKPI (Gereja Kristen Protestan Indonesia: Tinjauan Sejarah dan Pandangan ke Depan, the 1964 Working Paper of the HKBP Grand Synod, other relevant books, and scholarly articles. This study explains how the decisions made by the Ephorus, as the supreme leader of the HKBP, have significantly influenced harmony within the HKBP community. The research findings indicate that Rev. T.S. Sihombing’s decision to change the HKBP church constitution led to dissatisfaction among some pastors regarding his leadership. The decision by Rev. T.S. Sihombing to dismiss pastors who disagreed with his decision caused the conflict to escalate. The North Sumatra government’s intervention to help resolve the issue actually led groups that disagreed with Rev. T.S. Sihombing’s leadership to withdraw from the HKBP and establish a new church called the Indonesian Protestant Christian Church (GKPI).
