Abstract
The low level of students' conceptual understanding of acid–base topics remains a challenge in senior high school chemistry learning, highlighting the need for a learning model that actively engages students in constructing concepts and relating them to real-life contexts. This study aimed to determine the effect of the inquiry learning model integrated with the REACT strategy (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, and Transferring) on eleventh-grade students' conceptual understanding of acid–base topics. This study employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest–posttest nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 61 eleventh-grade students divided into an experimental class, which was taught using the inquiry learning model integrated with the REACT strategy, and a control class, which was taught using the Direct Instruction model. The research instrument was an 18-item valid and reliable two-tier multiple-choice conceptual understanding test. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score (66.48) than the control group (59.30), and a higher N-Gain score (0.62) than the control group (0.52). The Mann–Whitney U test yielded a significance value of 0.015 (p < 0.05) with an effect size of 0.45. Therefore, the inquiry learning model integrated with the REACT strategy had a positive effect on eleventh-grade students' conceptual understanding of acid–base topics.
