Abstract
***** This study aims to identify potential areas for tuna fishing (Thunnus spp.) based on oceanographic parameters in Sabang waters in 2024. The study uses a descriptive quantitative method based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) through skoring, overlay, and intersecting techniques on the parameters of sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, salinity, ocean currents, upwelling, and bathymetry using Aqua MODIS Level-3 data as well as supporting oceanographic data in the Western, I, Eastern, and II-intermediate seasons. The results show that the distribution of potential tuna fishing areas changes spatially with each season. The Eastern season and especially the transition season II are the most potential periods with the area of potential zones reaching 79% and 88%, respectively, while the Western and transition I seasons only reach 56% and 54%. The area around Rondo Island, the northern part of Weh Island, and the waters leading to the Andaman Sea are consistently identified as potential areas for tuna fishing throughout the season. The results of validation through participatory mapping showed that most of the fishermen's actual catch locations were in the potential zones of the modeling results, so that the resulting maps had a good level of compatibility with field conditions.
