Abstract
In chemistry education, advancements in VR technology have not been fully utilized, resulting in low student participation and engagement. This study aims to analyze the effect of using a virtual reality laboratory (VRL) on student engagement in the topic of buffer solutions. This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pre-test-post-test non-equivalent control group design, conducted at a private high school in East Jakarta during the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The study sample consisted of 72 11thgrade students selected using purposive sampling, comprising 36 students in the experimental group who learned using the VRL and 36 students in the control group who learned using videos. Student engagement was measured using the School Engagement Measurement (SEM) questionnaire, which consisted of 19 statements on a 1–5 Likert scale. Quantitative data were analyzed using the independentsamples t-test and the paired-samples t-test. The results showed a significant difference in the mean post-test scores between the experimental and control classes (p = 0.000), as well as a significant improvement in the experimental class (p = 0.000), whereas the control class did not show a significant improvement (p = 0.179). Thus, it can be concluded that the use of VRL is effective in increasing student engagement. The findings of this study support the integration of VRL as an innovative learning medium that encourages active participation and enhances the student learning experience.
