Abstract

***** This study aims to design and implement a rotation and heading control system using the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) method for an ESP32-S3-based azimuth drive robot to achieve accurate and stable robot motion. The research employed the prototype method, which included requirements analysis, hardware and software design, implementation of communication between the Android application and the ESP32-S3, implementation of the Madgwick sensor fusion algorithm for robot orientation estimation, system identification based on the robot's yaw response over time to obtain the transfer function model, determination of the initial PID parameters using the Internal Model Control (IMC) method, PID parameter tuning, and system performance evaluation. Motion commands in the form of LX, LY, and RX values were transmitted from the Android application to the ESP32-S3 to control the stepper motors and DC motors, while orientation data from the MPU9250 sensor were used as feedback signals for the PID control system. The experimental results showed that the optimal PID parameters for robot rotation control were Kp = 1.2, Ki = 1.2, and Kd = 0.425, resulting in an average error of 2.24° and a steady-state error of 0.88°. For the heading hold controller, the optimal parameters were Kp = 2.3, Ki = 0.16, and Kd = 0.2, producing an average error of 1.77° and an RMS error of 2.13°. Maneuver tests demonstrated that the robot successfully performed straight motion, 45° turns, 90° turns, and 180° rotations with stable responses and relatively small angular errors. These results indicate that the PID controller, whose initial parameters were determined using the IMC method, effectively improved rotational accuracy and heading stability, enabling the ESP32-S3-based azimuth drive robot to move accurately in the desired direction.
