Abstract

Serat batang pisang kepok diberi perlakuan asap cair selama 1 jam. Spesimen B paling mendekati standar SAE J661 pada kekerasan, sedangkan spesimen C pada keausan.*****The use of asbestos-based brake pads is still widely found due to their relatively low cost and good mechanical properties. However, this material has the potential to cause negative impacts on human health and the environment. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly brake pads based on natural fiber composites is required. This study aims to fabricate brake pad composites made from water hyacinth powder, teak wood powder, and banana stem fiber as asbestos substitutes, to analyze the effect of filler composition variations on hardness and wear rate, and to determine the optimum composition. This research employed an experimental method using a polyester resin matrix of 50% and three filler composition variations, namely specimen A (10% teak wood powder, 10% water hyacinth powder, 30% banana stem fiber), specimen B (10% teak wood powder, 20% water hyacinth powder, 20% banana stem fiber), and specimen C (10% teak wood powder, 30% water hyacinth powder, 10% banana stem fiber). The banana stem fiber was treated with liquid smoke immersion for 1 hour prior to fabrication. Specimens were produced using the compression molding method. Hardness testing was carried out using the shore D method based on ASTM D2240, while wear testing was conducted using the ogoshi method based on ASTM G99. The results showed that the filler composition significantly influenced the hardness and wear rate of the composite. The hardness values of specimens A, B, and C were 46.9 HD, 49.1 HD, and 46.6 HD, respectively. Meanwhile, the wear rates of specimens A, B, and C were 1.457 × 10⁻⁵, 7.257 × 10⁻⁶, and 1.94 × 10⁻⁵ mm²/kg, respectively. Specimen B most closely approaches the SAE J661 standard in terms of hardness, whereas Specimen C most closely approaches the standard in terms of wear resistance.
