Abstract
***** This study aims to determine the effect of the SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) on the reading comprehension skills of explanatory texts among fifth-grade students at MIS. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 54 students from MIS Nurul Iman, Bojonggede Village, selected using one-stage cluster sampling technique, comprising 27 students and 27 students in the control group. Data were collected through pretest, posttest, and student observation results, which were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-Test, Paired Sample t-Test, N-Gain, effect size, and coefficient of determination. The Independent Sample t-Test results showed tcount = 4.338, with the experimental group’s mean posttest score higher than the control group (78.59 > 68.52). The experimental group’s N-Gain was also higher than the control group (0.5032 > 0.3733), with Cohen’s d = 1.181 (large category) and R² = 20.6%. These results indicate that the SQ3R method has a significant effect on the reading comprehension skills of explanatory texts among fifth-grade students at MIS. Therefore, the SQ3R method can be used as an alternative method to improve students’ reading comprehension skills, and teachers are encouraged to implement it consistently in reading comprehension instruction so that students can familiarize themselves with each stage optimally.
