Abstract

***** Student activists involved in critical and rational organizations such as the Didaktika Student Press Institute (LPM) at Universitas Negeri Jakarta face distinct dynamics between religious life and organizational culture. Religion is still acknowledged as personally important, yet its expression is not always displayed explicitly within the organizational space, raising the possibility of a shift in how students interpret and express religion toward a more personal form that is not always visible in the public sphere. This study aims to describe the social background of LPM Didaktika student activists in constructing religious meaning, their views on religious behavior and expression, and the process of religious privatization they experience. The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach, employing in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation as data collection techniques. The subjects of this study were 5 student activists of LPM Didaktika UNJ from the 2026/2027 period with differing religious backgrounds, serving as key informants. The research was conducted from January 2026 to April 2026 and took place at the Secretariat Room of the Didaktika Student Press Institute, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The results show that the five informants' diverse religious backgrounds, upon encountering the objective reality of Didaktika's critical-intellectual culture, were internalized in a way that drove a reorientation from normative to critical-reflective thinking, along with a reinterpretation of religion from ritual toward social values and ethics. This process was then externalized through the view that religion is a private matter given meaning through social values, as well as through changes in religious behavior marked by a decline in formal ritual practice and the diminishing prominence of symbolic religious expression within the organizational space. This privatization process was driven by three interrelated contexts: a critical and rational organizational culture, the internal culture, norms, and stigma that developed within it, and each informant's personal life experience, which converge in a repositioning of religion within the activists' self-identity and are manifested in four forms of religious privatization: the privatization of authority, of meaning, of expression, and of practice.
