Abstract

***** The primary drive component in a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine that regulates the accuracy and stability of feed axis motion during the machining process is the servo motor. This study aims to analyze the power, torque, and rotational speed characteristics of the Delta ASDA-A2 servo motor, as well as its positioning accuracy and performance stability in operating the X, Y, and Z axes on a 3-axis CNC machine. Ballbar testing to detect geometric defects in X–Y axis circular interpolation, measurements of electrical properties and spindle motion on all three axes, and motor sizing simulations were used in this study. The results show that the servo motor used meets all torque validation specifications with an adequate safety margin. Due to its vertical motion, the Z-axis exhibited the lowest position error (35.7 PUU), while the X-axis (196 PUU) and Y-axis (202 PUU) had the highest values; however, all these values (0.018–0.101 mm) still met standard CNC machining tolerances. Ballbar testing showed that mechanical backlash in the ballscrew system is the second most common cause of interpolation errors (13–19%), after servo misalignment between the X and Y axes. We found that the Delta ASDA-A2 servo system offers good performance stability, accuracy that meets industry requirements, and adequate power-torque characteristics.
