Abstract

***** This study aims to analyze the spatial characteristics of the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) LRT Station as a transit-oriented development (TOD)-based transit space in a secondary area of Jakarta. This analysis employs Marc Augé’s theoretical framework of “Place” and “Non-Place,” supplemented by an examination of commuters’ spatial experiences and the concept of TOD. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, with qualitative methods as the primary approach and quantitative methods as a supplement. The case study method was chosen to conduct an in-depth analysis of the physical spaces of the TMII LRT Station and the Travoy Hub as a unified transit space. Qualitative data were collected through observations and interviews with 14 informants (purposive sampling). Meanwhile, quantitative data were collected through a mini-survey of 40 commuters (accidental sampling) and text mining of 155 Google Reviews. The manager of the Travoy Hub, identified by the initials MI, also served as a triangulation informant. This study was conducted from March 2025 to March 2026. The research findings indicate that the implementation of the TOD concept at the TMII LRT Station is realized through the fulfillment of the eight basic principles of TOD, although there are challenges regarding sustainable first-mile and last-mile transportation. This area is organized vertically across several floors with distinct functional characteristics, where Level M—as the station’s core—is designed purely for mobility efficiency, lacking elements of local identity or spaces that foster social interaction. Commuter movement patterns in this area are divided into two groups: routine commuters, whose movements are highly automated, and recreational commuters, whose movements are exploratory. Commuters’ spatial experiences are identified across three layers of experience: sensory, routine, and emotional. The TMII LRT station is predominantly identified as a “Non-Place,” consistently fulfilling all four of Augé’s characteristics. Although integration with the Travoy Hub opens the potential for a shift in the space’s character toward a “Place,” this commercial space also produces an illusion of inclusivity that masks socioeconomic exclusion.
