Abstract
***** This study aimed to analyze the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with the historical context of Jabir Ibn Hayyan’s discovery of distillation on students’ critical thinking skills. The study employed a quasi-experimental method with a Pretest-Posttest Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The sample was selected using non-probability purposive sampling and consisted of 31 students in the experimental class and 25 students in the control class. The experimental class received PBL instruction integrated with the history of chemistry, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through pretest and posttest consisting of five essay questions assessed using the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HCTSR). The results showed that the mean posttest score of the experimental class (63.40) was higher than that of the control class (53.20). The N-Gain score of the experimental class was categorized as moderate, whereas the control class was categorized as low. Hypothesis testing using the Mann–Whitney U test produced an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.016 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two classes. Therefore, it can be concluded that Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with the history of chemistry had a significant effect on students’ critical thinking skills in the topic of Jabir Ibn Hayyan’s discovery of distillation.
