Abstract
***** This study aims to analyze the effect of regional economic growth, investment, and the number of micro and small industries on the open unemployment rate in Sumatra during the 2019–2024 period. The study was motivated by the persistently high open unemployment rate in several provinces despite the continuous growth of the regional economy, investment, and the number of micro and small industries. This study employed a quantitative approach using panel data from ten provinces in Sumatra during 2019–2024. Secondary data were obtained from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and the Ministry of Investment/Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). The data were analyzed using panel data regression with EViews 12. Based on the Chow Test and Hausman Test, the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) was selected as the most appropriate model. The results show that regional economic growth and the number of micro and small industries have a negative and significant effect on the open unemployment rate, while investment has a negative but insignificant effect. The Adjusted R-squared value of 0.8666 indicates that 86.66% of the variation in the open unemployment rate is explained by the three independent variables, while the remaining 13.34% is explained by other factors outside the model. The findings are expected to provide input for policymakers in promoting labor-intensive investment and strengthening the development of micro and small industries to reduce the open unemployment rate.
