Abstract
***** This study aims to describe the impact of experiential learning through an internship program on the formation of cross-cultural understanding among students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Jakarta State University. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a data triangulation method, this study involved ten informants (R1–R10) who are alumni of the internship program. Data collection was conducted through a combination of a Likert-scale pre-interview questionnaire as macro mapping and in-depth semi-structured interviews. Initial research findings indicated a gap between high theoretical knowledge regarding Japanese sociocultural concepts and the ability to practically interpret implied meanings in the field. However, as the program progressed, the impact of experiential learning proved capable of bridging this gap. This successful student adaptation aligns with David A. Kolb's Experiential Learning theory, wherein students were able to transform concrete experiences of real workplace culture clashes into conceptualization and independent communication behavioral experiments. Furthermore, the success of this transformation is evidenced by the shift in students' intercultural sensitivity from an ethnocentric orientation toward ethnorelativism, reaching the Adaptation stage, as outlined in the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) by Milton J. Bennett. A key finding reveals that the Denial stage in the DMIS model was completely unrealized (skipped) by all respondents. This occurred because their formal academic background of 3 to 10 years in Japanese studies served as pre-existing cultural capital, eliminating initial cultural denial prior to departure.Through a profound reflection process in their learning cycle, students also successfully mastered and adapted to the manifestations of the honne-tatemae sociocultural concept, such as implied criticism, psychological praise, indirect social rejection, and collective diplomacy in a professional work environment. Keywords: Experiential Learning, Cross-Cultural Understanding, DMIS, Internship, Honne-Tatemae.
