Abstract
Kata Kunci: Intensitas penggunaan media sosial, perbandingan sosial ke atas, harga diri, kecemasan sosial, Generasi Z. ***** The rapid development of social media has made Generation Z most active user group, increasing their exposure to various forms of social integration in social media. Social media use intensity has been associated with social anxiety, however this relationship is assumed to occur through psychological mechanisms, namely upward social comparison and self-esteem. This study aimed to examine the effect of social media use intensity on social anxiety through mediating roles of upward social comparison and self-esteem among Generation Z media users based on the Cognitive Behavioral Model proposed by Rapee and Heimberg (1997). The participants consisted of 250 Generation Z social media users in Indonesia selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the social media use intensity, the lowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Use (SAS-MU). Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The structural model analysis showed that social media use intensity, upward social comparison, and self-esteem jointly explained 57,5% (R2 = 0,575) of variance in social anxiety. Social media use intensity had no direct effect on social anxiety or self-esteem but directly affected social anxiety through upard social comparison and serial mediation of upward social comparison and self-esteem. Meanwhile, self-esteem did not function as a single mediator. These findings suggest that social anxiety among Generation Z is influenced more by self-evaluative psychological processes that occur during social media use than by the intensity of social media use itself. Keywords: Social media use intensity, upward social comparison, self-esteem, social anxiety, Generation Z.
