Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh fan identification terhadap kecenderungan Schadenfreude pada fans Manchester United di Indonesia terhadap kekalahan Liverpool sebagai rival historis. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain asosiatif dan melibatkan 143 responden yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Pengukuran fan identification menggunakan Sport Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) dari Wann dan Branscombe (1993), sedangkan kecenderungan Schadenfreude diukur menggunakan skala berdasarkan konsep Leach et al. (2003). Data dianalisis menggunakan regresi linear sederhana. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fan identification berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap kecenderungan Schadenfreude (F = 59,883; p < 0,001) dengan nilai R² sebesar 0,298, yang menunjukkan bahwa fan identification mampu menjelaskan 29,8% variasi kecenderungan Schadenfreude. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi fan identification, semakin tinggi pula kecenderungan Schadenfreude. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi dalam memperkaya kajian mengenai hubungan fan identification dan Schadenfreude pada konteks rivalitas olahraga serta menjadi referensi bagi penelitian selanjutnya. ***** This study aimed to examine the effect of fan identification on the tendency of Schadenfreude among Manchester United supporters in Indonesia toward Liverpool's defeat as their historical rival. This study employed a quantitative approach with an associative research design and involved 143 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Fan identification was measured using the Sport Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) developed by Wann and Branscombe (1993), while the tendency toward Schadenfreude was measured using a scale developed based on the concept proposed by Leach et al. (2003). The data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that fan identification had a positive and significant effect on the tendency of Schadenfreude (F = 59.883; p < .001), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of .298, indicating that fan identification explained 29.8% of the variance in the tendency toward Schadenfreude. These findings indicate that higher levels of fan identification are associated with a greater tendency toward Schadenfreude among Manchester United supporters in Indonesia following Liverpool's defeat. This study contributes to the development of social psychology literature by enhancing the understanding of the relationship between fan identification and Schadenfreude in the context of sports rivalry and may serve as a reference for future research.
