Abstract

The development of digital technology has made smartphones an integral part of daily life. However, uncontrolled smartphone use has the potential to develop into problematic smartphone use (PSU). This study aims to analyze the influence of the perception of family cohesiveness and self-control on problematic smartphone use in emerging adulthood. This study uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study participants were 288 early adult individuals aged 18–29 years who were domiciled in Indonesia. Data were collected using the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), the cohesiveness dimension of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales III (FACES III), and the Brief Self-Control Scale for Internet (BSCS) that adapted and modified into smartphone use context. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression. The results showed that the regression model was significant, F(2, 285) = 268.90, p < .001, with the regression model’s ability to explain 65.4% of the variation in problematic smartphone use (R² = .654). Partially, the perceived family cohesion had a significant effect on problematic smartphone use (β = .178, p < .001). Self-control also had a significant effect on problematic smartphone use (β = −.767, p <.001). These findings suggest that problematic smartphone use in emerging adulthood is influenced by a combination of interpersonal factors and individual factors. Therefore, efforts to prevent problematic smartphone use need to consider strengthening the quality of family relationships and developing self-control in supporting more adaptive smartphone use.
