Abstract

************************************************************ This study examines the illocutionary acts found in Morrie Schwartz's utterances in Mitch Albom's memoir Tuesdays with Morrie (1997), using Searle's (1979) classification of illocutionary acts as the analytical framework. The study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts found in Morrie's utterances and to analyze how the dominance of a particular type reflects his role as a mentor throughout the memoir. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on 30 selected utterances spoken by Morrie in his dialogues with Mitch. The findings reveal that four out of five illocutionary act types proposed by Searle were identified in the data: assertives (19 occurrences, 63.3%), directives (7 occurrences, 23.3%), expressives (3 occurrences, 10%), and commissives (1 occurrence, 3.3%), while no declarations were found. The absence of declarations reflects the nature of Morrie and Mitch's relationship, which is grounded in personal trust and emotional connection rather than institutional authority. Assertives emerged as the dominant type, indicating that Morrie primarily communicates by sharing personal convictions and philosophical truths about life, death, love, and human connection. The use of philosophical truth through assertive acts plays a significant role in establishing the mentoring relationship in the memoir, as it allows Morrie to guide Mitch's character development through personal conviction and lived experience. When interpreted through the mentoring frameworks proposed by Rhodes (2002) and Kram (1983, as cited in Mullen & Klimaitis, 2019), this dominance reflects Morrie's role as a mentor who guides Mitch's psychosocial and character development through wisdom and personal experience. The study concludes that the dominant use of assertive illocutionary acts meaningfully reflects the nature and depth of the mentoring relationship itself. Future research is suggested to explore the direct-indirect speech act distinction, conduct comparative studies on mentor figures across different literary works, examine Mitch's reciprocal utterances toward Morrie, and expand the data set to strengthen the generalizability of findings related to illocutionary acts and mentorship in literary discourse.
