Abstract
***** This study aims to identify the categories of culturally loaded vocabulary (bunkago) and the translation techniques used in the subtitles of the film Rurouni Kenshin: Origins (2012). The film is set during the transitional period from the feudal Tokugawa Shogunate to the modernizing Meiji Restoration era, and therefore contains numerous historical terms, social strata, and speech styles characteristic of the samurai period, which pose particular challenges for translation, given that culturally loaded words are often difficult to translate literally (Matsui, 1996) and are further constrained by the spatial and temporal limitations of subtitling (Díaz Cintas & Remael, 2014). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with observation-and-note-taking and literature review used as data collection techniques, and the Miles and Huberman (1994) model—comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing—applied for data analysis. The theoretical framework draws on Newmark’s (1988) classification of culturally loaded vocabulary, consisting of five categories, combined with Hoed’s (2006) theory of translation techniques, consisting of nine techniques. The findings identified 17 instances of culturally loaded vocabulary, consisting of 3 instances of material culture, 6 instances of social culture, and 8 instances of gestures and habits, while no data were found for the ecology or organizations/customs categories. Of the nine translation techniques proposed by Hoed, seven were found to be employed: modulation (5 instances), cultural equivalence (5 instances), non-equivalence (4 instances), transposition (3 instances), descriptive translation (2 instances), phonological translation (1 instance), and official/standardized translation (1 instance), while additional explanation and footnotes were not found. Modulation and cultural equivalence emerged as the most dominant techniques, indicating that the translator sought to preserve the cultural content of the source language while producing a translation that remains natural and comprehensible to the target-language audience. This research is expected to contribute both theoretically and practically to the field of translation studies, particularly in the translation of Japanese-language films containing cultural and historical elements.
