Abstract

This study focuses on how the placing of Hobbits in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) reflects social class and power. While past research has primarily focused on heroism, morality, and character development, the Hobbits have received little study as a marginalized social group within Middle-earth's hierarchical framework. This study employs a qualitative research approach and uses Marxist Social Class Theory by Marx and Engels as the core theoretical framework, reinforced by Gramsci's notion of hegemony, Stuart Hall's theory of representation, Todorov's narrative structure, and Boggs and Petrie's cinema analysis. The data includes chosen sequences, dialogues, and visual compositions representing the Hobbits' relationships with various social groupings throughout the film. The analysis demonstrates that the Hobbits are continually represented as the lowest social class through narrative roles, speech, spatial organization, cinematic framing, and unequal involvement in institutional power. However, the film eventually restores the Hobbits' minor status by restoring their symbolic power through courage, loyalty, sacrifice, and moral responsibility. The findings show that The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring reinforces hierarchical social structures while challenging traditional assumptions that political authority alone determines power, implying that marginalized social groups can gain symbolic agency through narrative and cinematic representation. ***** Studi ini berfokus pada bagaimana penempatan Hobbit dalam The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) mencerminkan kelas sosial dan kekuasaan.
