Skripsi: Jakarta, Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Penelitian ini mengkaji representasi keluarga dan konstruksi identitas perempuan dalam memoir Broken Strings (2025) karya Aurelie Moeremans. Penelitian ini tidak mengkaji pengalaman pribadi penulis sebagai realitas faktual, melainkan berfokus pada bagaimana memoir tersebut mengonstruksi hubungan keluarga dan merepresentasikan perkembangan Aurelie sebagai the narrated I melalui unsur-unsur naratif. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall dan konsep becoming Simone de Beauvoir untuk menganalisis bagaimana makna keluarga dan identitas perempuan dibangun dalam teks memoir. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan analisis tekstual, penelitian ini menganalisis kata, frasa, kalimat, dialog, serta refleksi naratif yang merepresentasikan hubungan keluarga, ekspektasi, konflik, dan pembentukan identitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa memoir Broken Strings mengonstruksi keluarga sebagai ruang relasional yang kompleks dan dinamis melalui berbagai representasi, seperti perlindungan, ekspektasi, disiplin, pengakuan, konflik, penolakan, penerimaan, dan dukungan. Selain itu, memoir ini merepresentasikan identitas perempuan sebagai proses becoming yang terus berkembang melalui pengalaman keluarga dan hubungan sosial. Melalui konsep becoming Beauvoir, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa identitas perempuan dalam memoir tidak direpresentasikan sebagai kondisi yang melekat secara alami, melainkan sebagai sesuatu yang dikonstruksi melalui pengalaman hidup, ekspektasi keluarga, pengakuan dari orang lain, serta proses negosiasi antara pengalaman personal dan hubungan sosial. Dengan demikian, Broken Strings merepresentasikan keluarga sebagai ruang penting tempat identitas perempuan dibentuk dan dinegosiasikan secara terus-menerus. This study examines the representation of family and the construction of female identity in Aurelie Moeremans’ memoir Broken Strings (2025). Rather than examining the author’s personal experiences as factual reality, this study focuses on how the memoir constructs family relationships and represents the development of Aurelie as the narrated I through narrative elements. This study employs Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of becoming to analyze how meanings of family and female identity are produced within the memoir. Using a qualitative descriptive method and textual analysis, this research examines selected words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and reflections that represent familial relationships, expectations, conflicts, and identity formation. The findings reveal that the memoir constructs family as a complex and dynamic relational space represented through meanings of protection, expectation, discipline, recognition, conflict, rejection, acceptance, and support. Furthermore, the memoir represents female identity as a continuous process of becoming shaped through familial experiences and social relationships. Through Beauvoir’s concept of becoming, the study demonstrates that the narrated I’s understanding of femininity is not represented as an inherent condition, but as something constructed through experiences of familial expectations, external recognition, and the negotiation between personal experience and social relationships. Therefore, Broken Strings portrays family as a significant representational space in which female identity is continuously formed and negotiated.
