Abstract

***** This study aims to explore and understand how self-talk contributes to the formation of resilience in women who live independently in Jakarta in facing life's pressures, given the complex challenges faced by women who choose to migrate and live independently in a big city whether in terms of work, economic conditions, or social relationships which demand the ability to communicate with oneself as one of the strategies for survival. This study was analyzed using Vocate's self-talk theory, which encompasses the creation of meaning purpose, cognitive adaptation purpose, and speech communication functions, linked to Masten's resilience framework as a foundation for understanding the process of building individual resilience through intrapersonal communication. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving four female informants who have lived independently in Jakarta for more than five years. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, along with source triangulation through an interview with a clinical psychologist. The results show that resilience among women living independently in Jakarta is formed through self-talk that occurs continuously. Within the creation of meaning purpose dimension, reflective awareness, interaction with the environment, and the use of symbols in the form of affirmative statements help informants make fuller sense of their experience of independent living. Within the cognitive adaptation purpose dimension, the processes of assimilation and accommodation help informants adjust their thinking patterns to constantly changing life demands. Within the speech communication functions dimension, self-talk serves to bridge the individual with their social environment, aiding in problem analysis and decision-making, as well as emotion regulation so that daily activities can still be carried out. As such, these three dimensions are interrelated and collectively shape an individual's capacity to endure ongoing life pressures. Self-talk plays an important role in helping women who live independently in Jakarta build resilience and endure the pressures of life in a big city, so that independent women are expected to cultivate the habit of engaging in healthy dialogue with themselves as one of their primary strategies for facing the challenges of independent living.
