Abstract

**** This study aims to analyze the effects of foreign direct investment, population, trade openness, and inflation on tax revenue in developing countries across ASEAN, Africa, and Europe. Tax revenue is proxied by the tax-to-GDP ratio. This study employs a quantitative approach using secondary data obtained from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The sample consists of 22 developing countries observed during the 2016–2024 period and selected using a purposive sampling technique. The dataset forms an unbalanced panel comprising 193 country-year observations and is analyzed using panel data regression in EViews. The Chow test and Hausman test indicate that the Fixed Effect Model with cross-section fixed effects is the most appropriate specification. The estimation results show that foreign direct investment has a negative but statistically insignificant effect on tax revenue. Population has a positive and significant effect on tax revenue, with a coefficient of 0.324537 and a probability value of 0.0046. Trade openness also has a positive and significant effect, with a coefficient of 0.001480 and a probability value of 0.0284. Meanwhile, inflation has a negative but statistically insignificant effect on tax revenue. The adjusted R-squared value of 0.963210 indicates that most of the variation in tax revenue within the model is explained by the independent variables, the 2020 control variable, and country fixed effects. The findings indicate that population and trade openness are the factors that exhibit statistically significant relationships with tax revenue among the developing countries included in the sample.
