Abstract

Instrumen terdiri atas 24 pernyataan valid yang mengukur lima dimensi, yaitu ability to imitate, fantasy involvement, memory and attention, ability to fake, dan ability to play unusual roles. ***** This study aims to determine students’ role-playing ability in bartending learning in the Table Service Course at the Family Welfare Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This study was motivated by the widespread use of role play in vocational and hospitality education; however, previous studies have primarily focused on role play as a learning method and its outcomes, such as communication skills, speaking skills, self-confidence, learning independence, and learning outcomes. Meanwhile, role-playing ability, defined as an individual’s ability to perform a role, has received limited attention as a distinct construct, particularly in the context of bartending learning. This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects consisted of 26 students from the 2024 cohort of the Family Welfare Education Study Program who participated in role-play activities in the context of bartending learning, selected using a total sampling technique. The primary data were collected through a self-report questionnaire adapted from A Scale for the Measurement of Role-Playing Ability developed by Fletcher and Averill (1984), while observation was used as supporting data. The research instrument consisted of 24 valid statements measuring five dimensions: ability to imitate, fantasy involvement, memory and attention, ability to fake, and ability to play unusual roles. The findings showed that students’ role-playing ability in bartending learning was generally reflected in their ability to perform roles across the five dimensions. Students tended to demonstrate stronger abilities in performing and following roles within structured situations, while aspects related to imaginative involvement, role portrayal, and the ability to perform unusual roles showed greater variation in responses. Thus, this study provides a descriptive overview of students’ role-playing ability based on their self-reported responses in the context of bartending learning. The findings are not intended to measure the effectiveness or influence of role play on students’ abilities or learning outcomes.
