Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses pembentukan mathematical thinking anak usia dini melalui pendekatan pembelajaran STEAM berbasis unplugged coding. Mathematical thinking merupakan kemampuan berpikir matematis yang berkembang melalui proses mengenali pola, membangun hubungan, membuat dugaan, dan memberikan justifikasi logis terhadap suatu permasalahan. Pendekatan STEAM berbasis unplugged coding dipandang mampu menyediakan pengalaman belajar yang kontekstual, kolaboratif, dan bermakna karena melibatkan aktivitas eksploratif tanpa bergantung pada perangkat digital. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Subjek penelitian terdiri atas anak usia 5–6 tahun dan guru yang terlibat dalam pembelajaran STEAM berbasis unplugged coding. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Analisis data menggunakan model Miles, Huberman, dan Saldaña yang meliputi kondensasi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Analisis proses mathematical thinking mengacu pada kerangka John Mason yang meliputi specialising, generalising, conjecturing, dan convincing. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembentukan mathematical thinking berkembang melalui interaksi anak dengan aktivitas bermain, mediasi guru, penggunaan simbol, serta penyelesaian masalah secara kolaboratif dalam pembelajaran STEAM berbasis unplugged coding. Temuan penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap pengembangan praktik pembelajaran anak usia dini yang lebih bermakna serta menjadi referensi bagi pendidik dalam merancang pembelajaran yang mendukung berkembangnya kemampuan berpikir matematis sejak usia dini. Mathematical thinking refers to children's ability to recognize patterns, establish relationships, formulate conjectures, and provide logical justifications when solving problems. A STEAM-based unplugged coding approach offers meaningful, contextual, and collaborative learning experiences by engaging children in hands-on activities without relying on digital devices. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. The participants consisted of children aged 5–6 years and teachers involved in STEAM-based unplugged coding activities. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The analysis of mathematical thinking was guided by John Mason's framework consisting of specialising, generalising, conjecturing, and convincing. The findings indicate that mathematical thinking develops through children's engagement in play-based activities, teacher mediation, symbolic representations, and collaborative problem-solving within STEAM-based unplugged coding learning. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of meaningful early childhood learning practices and serve as a reference for educators in designing learning experiences that foster mathematical thinking from an early age.
