Abstract

Judul skripsi sarjana ini adalah "Cultural Identity and Multicultural Representation in A Man Called Otto (2022)." Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan yaitu analisis konstruksi dan negosiasi identitas budaya yang dilakukan melalui interaksi multikultural yang terjadi dalam film A Man Called Otto (2022). Dalam melakukan penelitian dengan tujuan tersebut, penulis menggunakan teori representasi konstruksionis Stuart Hall (1997) sebagai kerangka teori utama untuk menganalisis cara bagaimana film ini mengkonstruksi identitas budaya dengan strategi representasionalnya, dan hibriditas budaya serta ruang ketiga (third space) Homi K. Bhabha (1994) sebagai kerangka teori pendukung dalam analisis bagaimana pertemuan antar budaya antara Otto dan Marisol membangun ruang negosiasi budaya dan transformasi identitas. Metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif-interpretatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini melalui analisis tekstual berupa dialog, visual dan naratif dalam film tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa A Man Called Otto mengkonstruksi identitas budaya sebagai suatu proses cair, produk diskursif dan terus-menerus dinegosiasikan; serta bahwa kedua karakter mengalami transformasi identitas yang signifikan melalui pertemuan antar budaya mereka, menghasilkan identitas relasional yang tidak dapat dikonstruksi secara mandiri oleh masing-masing pihak. ***** The title of the undergraduate thesis is "Cultural Identity and Multicultural Representation in A Man Called Otto (2022)." The purpose of this research is to look at how different aspects of cultural identity are made and expressed through characters and events expressing other cultures through the story of A Man Called Otto (2022). The researcher used Stuart Hall's (1997) theory of representation as the foundation for examining cultural identity in A Man Called Otto (2022) through the lens of the patterns that they created, by using Homi K. Bhabha's (1994) theories about cultural hybridisation, and the third space, as a means of analysing how the cultural experiences of Otto and Marisol create new spaces for negotiating cultural identity and transformation. This research was conducted through a qualitative and descriptive perspective through the use of qualitative textual analysis of the dialogues, visuals and sequential order of the film. The results showed that Otto and Marisol's relationship creates a third space; that both of their identities change because of their interactions with each other and create a relationship between them that neither would have created on their own.
