Abstract
***** Conventional shoe drying is still constrained by weather conditions and by differences in the thermal characteristics of shoe materials such as synthetic leather, canvas, and mesh, each requiring a different drying duration and prone to damage when not properly controlled. This study aims to design a smart shoe dryer prototype that accommodates drying needs according to material characteristics, to implement an ESP32-based Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) algorithm to adaptively control the decrease in relative humidity (RH) following a reference model, and to design an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system for real-time temperature, humidity, and drying status. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The MRAC controller with the MIT rule regulates fan speed through a PWM signal based on the difference in relative humidity (ΔRH) between the drying chamber and the inside of the shoe relative to a reference model, while the PTC heating element operates at a constant temperature as the drying energy source. Temperature, humidity, and fan duty-cycle data are transmitted in real time through the ESP32 to a Google Spreadsheet using Google Apps Script. Test results show that the MRAC system adjusts its adaptive gain according to material characteristics, reaching 1.45 for synthetic leather, 2.63 for canvas, and 3.00 for mesh, with the fan duty cycle reaching 100% in all tests and the chamber temperature remaining stable at around 28°C. It can be concluded that the MRAC- and ESP32-based smart shoe dryer prototype adaptively controls the decrease in humidity according to differences in shoe material characteristics, without manual adjustment of control parameters for each material type.
