Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan level-level mekanisme pertahanan diri pada tokoh utama dalam novel La Tresse karya Laetitia Colombani melalui kajian psikologi sastra. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori mekanisme pertahanan diri menurut teori Vaillant (1992) yang mengklasifikasikan ke dalam empat level mekanisme pertahanan diri, yaitu psychotic defenses, immature defenses, neurotic defenses, dan mature defenses, yang terdiri atas 18 jenis mekanisme pertahanan diri. Novel ini mengisahkan tiga perempuan dari latar budaya yang berbeda, yaitu Smita, Giulia, dan Sarah, yang menghadapi berbagai tekanan psikologis sehingga memunculkan beragam mekanisme pertahanan diri. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis isi. Data primer berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat dalam novel La Tresse karya Laetitia Colombani (2017) yang menunjukkan mekanisme pertahanan diri pada tokoh utama. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui metode simak dan teknik catat menurut Mahsun (2017). Selanjutnya, analisis data menggunakan model Miles et al. (2014) yang meliputi tiga tahapan, yaitu kondensasi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan dan verifikasi kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 32 data yang merepresentasikan empat level mekanisme pertahanan diri. Neurotic defenses merupakan level yang paling banyak ditemukan dengan 14 data, yang terdiri atas rationalization sebanyak 12 data dan reaction formation sebanyak 2 data. Mature defenses ditemukan sebanyak 12 data, yang terdiri atas anticipation sebanyak 6 data, suppression sebanyak 3 data, altruism sebanyak 2 data, dan humor sebanyak 1 data. Immature defenses ditemukan sebanyak 4 data, yang terdiri atas schizoid fantasy sebanyak 3 data dan acting out sebanyak 1 data. Sementara itu, psychotic defenses ditemukan sebanyak 2 data berupa denial. Temuan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa tokoh utama dalam novel La Tresse menggunakan keempat level mekanisme pertahanan diri, yang direpresentasikan melalui berbagai jenis mekanisme, sebagai respons terhadap tekanan, kecemasan, dan konflik psikologis yang dihadapinya. Kata kunci: La Tresse, mekanisme pertahanan diri, novel, Vaillant. ***** This study aims to describe the levels of defense mechanisms employed by the main characters in Laetitia Colombani’s novel La Tresse through a literary psychology approach. This study employs Vaillant’s (1992) theory of defense mechanisms, which classifies defense mechanisms into four levels, namely psychotic defenses, immature defenses, neurotic defenses, and mature defenses, comprising 18 niveaux of defense mechanisms. The novel tells the story of three women from different cultural backgrounds, namely Smita, Giulia, and Sarah, who face various psychological pressures, leading them to employ a variety of defense mechanisms. This study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis. The primary data consists of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from the novel La Tresse by Laetitia Colombani (2017) that illustrate defense mechanisms in the main characters. Data collection was conducted through the the reading and note-taking techniques described by Mahsun (2017). Subsequently, data analysis utilized the model proposed by Miles et al. (2014), which comprises three stages, namely data condensation, display data, drawing and verification conclusions. The results of the study show that there were 32 data representing four levels of defense mechanisms. Neurotic defenses were the most frequently identified level, with 14 data, comprising 12 data of rationalization and 2 data of reaction formation. Mature defenses were identified in 12 data, comprising 6 data of anticipation, 3 data of suppression, 2 data of altruism, and 1 data of humor. Immature defenses were identified in 4 data, comprising 3 data of schizoid fantasy and 1 data of acting out. Meanwhile, psychotic defenses were identified in 2 data, both of which involved denial. These findings indicate that the main characters in the novel La Tresse employ all four levels of defense mechanisms, represented through various niveaux of mechanisms, in response to the stress, anxiety, and psychological conflicts they faces.
