Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of cultural words found in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and to analyze the translation techniques used in its Indonesian translation. This study applied a qualitative approach with content analysis as the research method. The data consisted of cultural words, phrases, and expressions found in the English source text and their corresponding translations in the Indonesian target text. The analysis was based on Newmark’s (1988) cultural categories and translation procedures. At the initial stage, 83 cultural word candidates were identified. After the validation process with an expert validator, 9 data were considered invalid because they did not meet the criteria of cultural words used in this study. Therefore, 74 validated data were used as the final data for analysis. The findings show that the cultural words in the novel are classified into four categories: Ecology, Material Culture, Social Culture, and Organizations, Customs, Activities, Procedures, and Concepts. Meanwhile, the category of Gestures and Habits was not found in the validated data. The most frequent category is Organizations, Customs, Activities, Procedures, and Concepts, with 45 data or 60.81%. This dominance reflects the strong influence of Greek mythology in the novel. In addition, the most frequently used translation procedure is Transference, with 39 data or 52.70%. This finding indicates that the translator tends to preserve source-language cultural terms, especially proper names and mythology-related terms. This study shows that translating cultural words in fantasy literature involves balancing the preservation of source-cultural identity with the need to provide clearer meaning in the target text. Keywords: cultural words, translation techniques, translation procedures, Newmark, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief ***** Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kata budaya yang terdapat dalam novel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief karya Rick Riordan dan menganalisis teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam terjemahan bahasa Indonesia novel tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis konten. Data penelitian berupa kata, frasa, dan ungkapan budaya yang ditemukan dalam teks sumber bahasa Inggris dan padanannya dalam teks sasaran bahasa Indonesia. Analisis dilakukan berdasarkan kategori kata budaya dan prosedur penerjemahan yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark (1988). Pada tahap awal, terdapat 83 kandidat kata budaya. Setelah melalui proses validasi oleh validator ahli, 9 data dinyatakan tidak sesuai dengan kriteria kata budaya dalam penelitian ini. Dengan demikian, 74 data digunakan sebagai data akhir untuk dianalisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kata budaya dalam novel ini diklasifikasikan ke dalam empat kategori, yaitu Ekologi, Budaya Material, Budaya Sosial, serta Organisasi, Adat Istiadat, Kegiatan, Prosedur, dan Konsep. Sementara itu, kategori Gestur dan Kebiasaan tidak ditemukan dalam data yang telah divalidasi. Kategori yang paling dominan adalah Organisasi, Adat Istiadat, Kegiatan, Prosedur, dan Konsep dengan 45 data atau 60,81%. Dominasi ini menunjukkan kuatnya pengaruh mitologi Yunani dalam novel. Selain itu, prosedur penerjemahan yang paling dominan adalah Transference dengan 39 data atau 52,70%. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah cenderung mempertahankan istilah budaya dari bahasa sumber, terutama nama diri dan istilah yang berhubungan dengan mitologi. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerjemahan kata budaya dalam karya sastra fantasi melibatkan keseimbangan antara mempertahankan identitas budaya sumber dan memberikan kejelasan makna dalam teks sasaran.
