Abstract

***** This study aims at investigating how peer response activity is used in EAPI-2 class of the English Department of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Peer response activity is the activity in which students work together to provide feedback on one another’s writing in both written and oral formats. The method used in this study is case study. The participants are students of EAPI-2 class of the English Department of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The data collected by means of nonparticipant observation and documentation are analyzed by selecting relevant data, classifying the data based on the research question namely how peer response activity is implemented in EAPI-2 class of the English Department of Universitas Negeri Jakarta, what focuses of peer response activity which is implemented in EAPI-2 class of Universitas Negeri Jakarta, how students give feedback to their peers and how peer response activity is perceived by students, and analyzing and interpreting the data descriptively. The findings show that in conducting peer response activity in EAPI-2 class, some procedures are applied which are asking students to sit in groups or in pairs, exchange their writings with the members of their group, read their peers’ writings, give feedback on it, return their peers’ writing, read the feedback given by their peers, and revise their writings. In conducting peer response activity, students of EAPI-2 class focus their feedback on three aspects of writing which are content, organization, and grammar. Besides, findings show that students tend to give feedback in general. Most feedback consists of judgments without any meaningful comments. The feedback is considered insufficient to be used in the process of revision of students’ writing. Findings also indicate that students find that peer response activity benefits them in getting feedback from readers’ point of view, getting new ideas or information for exploring their own writing since their peers’ topic is same with their topic, and making them learn from their peers’ mistakes. However, students say that the feedback given by their peers is not adequate. Therefore, they still need the feedback from the lecturer since they find that their level of knowledge is not really different each other.
