Abstract
***** This study aimed at investigating the students’ self efficacy in the process of producing written text for publication. Specifically, it identifies the problems the students’ faced during the process and the strategies they used to solve the problems. These strategies then showed their self efficacy. The study was conducted for six months in the English Club of SMPN 71 Jakarta. The sample of the study was one group consisting of 5 students. A case study was used to find the answer to the research questions with the researcher took part as both observer and active change agent. The study used four methods to gather the data. The first was observation which was done in 8 meetings of English Club (from the 9 th of May 2011 until 9th of June 2011). The second was documentation of the students’ work during the meetings. The third and Fourth were questionnaire and interview. Both of them were done after the English Club was finished. The interpretation of the students’ self efficacy was taken from Barnhardt and Pajares. The result of the study showed that there were nine problems the students faced in the process of producing written text for publication. The problems were understanding instruction, selecting texts, understanding the content of texts, rewriting the texts with appropriate mechanics, retelling a descriptive text, making description of someone, translating difficult word for producing a descriptive text, using correct grammatical rules in a sentence, and decorating individual text and wall magazine. To overcome the problem, the students used different strategies. There were a lot of strategies the students used. However, all the strategies could be summarized into three broad strategies which were peer collaboration, teacher guidance, and individual problem solving. From the problems and strategies found in this study, it could be concluded that the students had self efficacy in solving the problem which ranged from high, average, and low. Besides, the sources of their self efficacy were from actual experience, vicarious experience, and verbal persuasion from the teacher. This research implied that no matter how hard the problem the students faced would not make the students give up in accomplishing the tasks as long as they had self efficacy. The researcher of this study recommends English teachers in Indonesia to nurture and develop the students’ self efficacy in the learning process. For the next researchers, the researcher of this study suggests them to conduct similar research for investigating the students’ self efficacy in other skills besides writing.
