Abstract

This study aims to analyze self-identity construction of bullying Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Survivor named Libby Strout, a sixteen years old girl who came back to school after housebound and received medication for several physical and mental health issues including Binge Eating Disorder, anxiety, and panic attacks due to bullying consequences in Jennifer Niven’s Holding Up the Universe. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that may develop after being exposed to a traumatic event, severe physical or mental harm, or terrifying and threatening event. Deploying Elizabeth Brett’s concept of PTSD and Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis theories, this study applied a descriptive-analytical method to analyze the causes and symptoms of Libby’s PTSD and the process of her self-identity construction. The result of this study showed that Libby developed several PTSD symptoms including re-experiencing traumatic events through flashbacks, sleeping and concentrating difficulty, the use of violence as the escaping way, emotional numbness, and social withdrawal due to series of bullying events. In consequences of her weight, Libby was being bullied involving physical, verbal, social, and cyber types of bullying. Along her journey to recover, Libby experienced anxiety and two types of defense mechanisms (resistance and regression). She was helped by Mr. Levine in a counseling class called Conversation Circle and once a week meeting with her former caregiver, Rachel. Both of them helped Libby to reveal her emotions and traumas. As her reaction for being bullied, Libby did self-acceptance by showing her body using bikini in front of the school main hall. Eventually, Libby got better physically and mentally, found meaning in what she loved which was dancing, and loved how the way she was. Keywords: self-identity construction, bullying, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychoanalysis ************ Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa konstruksi identitas diri seorangpenyintas Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) akibat bullying bernama Libby Strout, seorang gadis berusia enam belas tahun yang kembali ke sekolah setelah tinggal di rumah dan menerima pengobatan akibat beberapa masalah kesehatan fisik dan mental termasuk Binge Eating Disorder, kecemasan, dan serangan panik sebagai kosekuensi dari bullying dalam Holding Up the Universe karya Jennifer Niven. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) adalah gangguan yang dapat muncul setelah seseorang terekspos kejadian traumatik, bahaya fisik and mental yang kuat, atau kejadian yang menakutkan dan mengancam. Menggunakan konsep PTSD oleh Elizabeth Brett dan teori-teori psikonalisis oleh Sigmund Freud, penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analitikal untuk menganalisa penyebab dan gejala PTSD yang dialami Libby dan proses konstruksi identitas dirinya. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa Libby memiliki beberapa gelaja PTSD diantaranya adalah mengalami kembali kejadian traumatik melalui flashback, kesulitan tidur dan konsentrasi, penggunaan kekerasan sebagai pelampiasan, mati rasa secara emosional, dan penarikan diri secara sosial akibat kejadian bullying yang berlanjut. Akibat berat badannya, Libby di-bully secara fisik, verbal, sosial, dan cyber. Dalam perjalanannya menuju pemulihan, Libby mengalami kecemasan dan dua tipe mekanisme pertahanan (resistensi dan regresi). Ia dibantu oleh Pak Levine di dalam sebuah kelas konseling bernama Conversation Circle dan pertemuan seminggu sekali dengan mantan perawatnya, Rachel. Keduanya membantu Libby untuk mengeluarkan emosi dan traumanya. Sebagai reaksi aksi pembulian terhadap dirinya, Libby menunjukan penerimaan diri dengan mempertunjukan tubuhnya menggunakan bikini didepan lorong utama sekolah. Pada akhirnya, Libby menjadi lebih baik secara fisik dan mental, menemukanmakna pada apa yang ia cintai yakni menari, dan mencintai dirinya apa adanya.
