Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of stop motion media on the ability to write explanatory text for VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 97 Jakarta in the 2019/2020 school year. This research is an experimental research. The research design was a pre-test and post-test group. The number of samples of this study were 27 students. In this study, stop motion media was appropriate to overcome the difficulties of writing explanatory text for students and teachers. Stop motion media is an audio-visual media that combines pieces of images into video that movie interrelated and successively. Stop motion media presents procceses and cause and effect of phenomena that are related and succesive according to the structure and rules of the explanatory text language. Thus, students can actively analyze stop motion videos so that students understanding of the development of content and language rules in writing explanatory text is better. The results of this study indicate that the students‟ ability to write explanatory texts has increased in terms of structure, linguistics rules, and logical and succesive exposure due to the influence of stop motion media. The most dominant progress from the influence of stop motion media is progress in the aspects of a series of explanatory text explanations .The results showed that the average ability of students after being given treatment in the form of stop motion media was 79.055 with a standard deviation of 8.515. The number of students who reached the minimum passing threshold of 74 was 21 students with a percentage above 70%.The difference in the average score in nine aspects indicates the influence of stop motion video media. From the results of the t-test calculation, the t-table results are greater than the t-count, namely t-count (11.180)> t-table (2.052) with a significance level of 0.05.Thus, it can be concluded that the hypothesis is accepted, namely that there is an effect of stop motion video media on the ability to write explanation text of the VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 97 Jakarta. The effect of using stop motion media makes students' explanatory text writing skills better. Therefore, stop motion media can also be implicated in learning to write procedural texts. The use of stop motion media can be used in learning procedure text, because visualization and audio in stop motion media can display a series of activities based on the time of the event as well as the characteristics of the procedure text, the description of the steps for doing something, making something, or playing something based on the time sequence.
