Abstract

Studi ini berfokus pada bagaimana seksisme direpresentasikan di dalam meme Boys Vs. Girls. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan representasi dari seksisme yang muncul di meme Boys Vs. Girls. Menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis-interpretatif, penelitian ini menganalisis unsur-unsur teks visual dan tertulis dari empat meme Boys Vs. Girls. Teori-teori untuk penelitian ini terdiri dari teori semiotik sosial visual oleh Gunther Kress dan Van Leeuwen untuk menganalisis teks-teks visual, sistemik fungsional linguistik oleh M.A.K Halliday untuk menganalisis teks-teks tertulis, dan teori stereotip gender oleh Prentice dan Carranza. Representasi seksisme terlihat dari elemen-elemen visual yang ada di dalam meme Boys Vs. Girls seperti pakaian, gerak tubuh, dan arah pandangan yang menunjukkan bahwa laki-laki digambarkan dengan maskulinitas dan kepercayaan diri sedangkan perempuan digambarkan dengan feminitas dan ketidakpercayaan diri. Elemen-elemen lain seperti warna, jarak sosial, dan sudut pandang terlihat untuk melibatkan pembaca dengan karakter yang direpresentasikan di dalam meme. Elemen-elemen tertulis yang ada di caption meme seperti kata “Beautiful” “Boys’ Dream” “Masturbate” terlihat untuk menambahkan konteks teks visual yang menunjukkan seksisme dengan menunjukkan “material atau relational process”. Meme Boys Vs. Girls memghadirkan seksisme dengan cara menggambarkan stereotip gender laki-laki dan perempuan yang didramatisir untuk memperlihatkan perbedaan laki-laki dengan perempuan untuk menghibur para pembaca. *************** This study focuses on how sexism is represented in Boys Vs. Girls memes. The purpose of this study is to describe the representations of sexism that appear in Boys Vs. Girls memes. Using a descriptive-analytical-interpretative method, this study analyzes the visual and written elements of four Boys Vs. Girls memes. The theories used for this research consist of visual social semiotic theory by Gunther Kress and Van Leeuwen to analyze the visual texts, systemic functional linguistics by M.A.K Halliday to analyze the written texts, and gender stereotypes theories by Deborah A. Prentice and Erica Carranza. The representation of sexism can be seen from the visual elements in Boys Vs. Girls memes like the outfit, gestures, and eye lines where it shows that men depicted with masculinity and confidence while women are depicted with femininity and unconfidence. Other elements such as colour, social distance, and perspective are presented to relate the viewers with the represented participants within the meme. The written elements in the meme caption such as the word “Beautiful”, “Boys’Dream”, “Masturbate” are seen to add more context to the visual text by showing material or relational process. Boys Vs. Girls memes present sexism by depicting overly-dramatized men and women gender stereotypes to show the differences between men and women to entertain its viewers.
