Abstract

The need for good communication skills in english is highly required to compete in many fields of employment in today’s world. Communication skills is the ability of expressing thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and interpersonal communication. Therefore, this study aims to to explore skills of communication in the course of English for Popluar Science Communication course in ELESP UNJ. In this study, rubric from Bionic Teaching (2009) is used as indicators of communication skills. Qualitative approach with deductive content analysis is used as the method of this study. The data sources needed in this research are syllabus and learning activity(s) of English Popular Science Communication course in ELESP UNJ. In conducting the study, the data are gathered from specific parts of syllabus. And for learning activity(s), the data are gathered from teacher-learners interaction in the middle of teaching and learning activity(s). The findings showed that some aspects of communication skills found in componenets of syllabus which are course policies, learning method(s), course objectives, and assessment criteria and some aspects of communication skills found when lecturer encourages learners to ask any questions, lecturer gives information to learners about course in details, lecturer gives explanation related to the learners’ questions to shape their concept, lecturer and learners do class discussion, lecturer informs learners to explore the learning platform, and lecturer gives feedback to learners. Kebutuhan akan keterampilan komunikasi yang baik dalam bahasa Inggris sangat diperlukan untuk bersaing di banyak bidang pekerjaan di dunia saat ini. Keterampilan komunikasi adalah kemampuan mengekspresikan pikiran dan ide-ide secara efektif menggunakan komunikasi lisan, tertulis dan interpersonal. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi keterampilan komunikasi untuk mata kuliah Popular Science Communication di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Dalam penelitian ini, rubrik dari Bionic Teaching (2009) digunakan sebagai indikator keterampilan komunikasi. Pendekatan kualitatif dengan analisis konten deduktif digunakan sebagai metode penelitian ini. Sumber data yang dibutuhkan dalam penelitian ini adalah silabus dan kegiatan pembelajaran mata kuliah Popular Science Communication di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UNJ. Dalam melakukan penelitian, data dikumpulkan dari bagian-bagian tertentu silabus. Serta untuk kegiatan pembelajaran, data dikumpulkan dari interaksi guru-peserta didik di dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa beberapa aspek keterampilan komunikasi telah ditemukan dalam komponen silabus yang merupakan tata tertib, metode pembelajaran, tujuan mata kuliah, dan kriteria penilaian dan beberapa aspek keterampilan komunikasi juga telah ditemukan ketika dosen mendorong pelajar untuk mengajukan pertanyaan, dosen memberikan informasi kepada pelajar tentang kursus secara rinci, dosen memberikan penjelasan yang berkaitan dengan pertanyaan peserta jar untuk membentuk konsep mereka , dosen dan pelajar melakukan diskusi kelas, dosen menginformasikan peserta pelajar untuk mengeksplorasi platform pembelajaran, dan dosen memberikan umpan balik kepada pelajar.
