Abstract

Good writing has cohesion and coherence. The sentences and words used must relate to each other and also their meanings are related. So cohesion and coherence are the main aspects in a text. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which students were able to analyze the cohesion and coherence of English texts, especially in using grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion as difficulties. In this study, the method used is a qualitative approach with content analysis technique, where the researcher collects data, analyzes data, writes research results and concludes the study. Thesis of UMT English Education students in the last 5 years. In this study, the analysis carried out showed that many students in writing their English education theses still did not understand about grammatical cohesion and then lexical cohesions, namely repetition, synonym, hyphonym, antonym, and meronym. The results of this study also affect the coherence analysis, namely causal relationships, conflicting relationships, sample relationships, temporal relationships, explanatory relationships and generalization relationships. The results of this study concluded that UMT students needed to better understand the use of cohesion and coherence in a text. Because there is a relationship between cohesion and coherence. So that students are expected to understand text that is legible and meaningful. **************** Tulisan yang baik memiliki kohesi dan koherensi. Kalimat dan kata yang digunakan harus berkaitan satu sama lain dan juga maknanya saling terkait. Jadi kohesi dan koherensi merupakan aspek utama dalam sebuah teks. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sejauh mana mahasiswa mampu menganalisis kohesi dan koherensi teks bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam menggunakan kohesi gramatikal dan kohesi leksikal sebagai kesulitan. Dalam penelitian ini metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatifdengan teknik analisis isi,dimana peneliti mengumpulkan data, menganalisis data, menuliskan hasil penelitian dan menyimpulkan penelitian. Skripsi mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UMT dalam 5 tahun terakhir. Dalam penelitian ini, analisis yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa banyak mahasiswa dalam penulisan skripsi pendidikan bahasa Inggrisnya masih belum memahami tentang kohesi gramatikaldan kemudian kohesi leksikalyaitu repetisi, sinonim, hiponim, antonim, dan meronim. Hasil penelitian ini juga mempengaruhi analisis koherensi yaitu hubungan sebab akibat, hubungan yang saling bertentangan, hubungan contoh, hubungan temporal, hubungan penjelas dan hubungan generalisasi. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa UMT perlu lebih memahami penggunaan kohesi dan koherensi dalam sebuah teks. Karena ada hubungan antara kohesi dan koherensi. Sehingga diharapkan siswa memahami teks yang terbaca dan bermakna.
