Abstract

The objective of this research is to improve the students’ reading comprehension through Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). This study uses qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research implemented in the Higher School of Economics student of Islamic Sharia Economics Banking Indonesia (STEI SEBI) majoring Islamic Accounting second semester in February-April 2014.Research data collected using observations and interviews as well as written tests reading for 2 cycles of research by 30 respondents. The finding of the study is the increase in students’ reading comprehension as indicated by the increasing of reading comprehension in 3 aspects: literal aspect, inferential aspects and evaluation aspects. The findings also indicate that the presence of indicators of successful reading achievement of students in the second cycle, the average value of the achievement of students in the early stages of observation is at 68 and there is an increase of 10 points at the end of the first cycle assessment to 78 and at the end of the second cycle there is an increase of 9 points that is 87 by the end of this cycle also contained 93 % of the students or by 28 students scoring above 80. From the results of this study, lecturers advised to use a wide variety of classes such as CSR strategies. Additionally, classroom management and teaching groups should also be implemented well as well as the provision of reading materials such as articles or English text associated with the majors they work to improve the vocabulary.
