Abstract

Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif-analitis, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperlihatkan penggambaran penganiayaan anak dalam novel bertajuk “The Bad Beginning” karya Lemony Snicket. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menyelidiki efek dari penganiayaan anak terhadap anak-anak Baudelaire. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, terdiri dari: (1) Arketipe Yatim Piatu yang dikemukakan oleh Carl Jung untuk menganalisis perubahan tingkah laku seseorang yang ditinggalkan oleh kedua orang tuanya, (2) Teori Keterikatan yang dikemukakan oleh John Bowlby untuk menganalisis efek penganiayaan anak terhadap anak-anak Baudelaire. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penganiayaan anak yang terjadi pada ketiga tokoh anak tersebut cukup mirip, yaitu mereka cenderung mengalami penarikan diri dan keterikatan-kecemasan terhadap lingkungan sosial. ********** Using a descriptive-analytical method, the purpose of this study is to reveal the portrayal of child maltreatment in “The Bad Beginning” by Lemony Snicket. Additionally, this study also aims to investigate the effects of child maltreatment upon the Baudelaire children. There are two theories that are deployed in this study: (1) Orphan Archetype by Carl Jung, to analyze the behavioural changes after a loss, (2) Attachment Theory by John Bowlby, to analyze the effects of child maltreatment upon the Baudelaire children. The result of this study shows that the effects of child maltreatment can be quite similar upon each character, including social withdrawal and anxious attachment.
