Abstract

******* This study focuses on the portrayal of the main character’s maternal identity reconstruction along with her postpartum depression recovery in The Push by Ashley Audrain. By deploying Beck’s concept of postpartum depression, Freud’s theory of personality, Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, and Stern’s theory of motherhood constellation, this study applies descriptive-analytical method to analyze the process of Blythe’s maternal identity reconstruction along with her postpartum depression recovery. The finding shows that Blythe experiences several risk factors that lead to the occurrence of symptoms of postpartum depression. Meanwhile, Blythe’s Id constantly reflects destructive impulses that induces recurring anxiety. To protect her mental state, Blythe’s Ego negotiates the destructive desires through the collected value and moral compass from Superego as well as operation of four defense mechanisms, in which Undoing and Denial are the most active ones. In terms of psychosocial development, Blythe experiences crisis of inferiority crisis of isolation and crisis of stagnation. Furthermore, Blythe fails to surpass the primary relatedness stage in her first motherhood constellation and supporting matrix stage in her second motherhood constellation. Blythe manages to recover from her depressive state after she manages to reintegrate her motherhood desire and collects additional help in the figure of guided breathing therapy for one and half years by a therapist, in which the help is fruitful for her to accept her unwanted motherhood experiences and regain control of her life. As Blythe manages to recover from her depressive state, it also indicates her success to reconstruct her maternal identity.
