Abstract

This study aims to examine how spirit of Islam, focuses on Islamic values and Diaspora life are reflected in the characters in this novel. Through the concept and context of Post-Islamism where Islamic cultural values and products such as novels, appear in the public arena and more concerned with the realization of the essence of Islam. Using a descriptive analytical approach, this study explores words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that portrayed Islamic values and Diaspora life. Islamic values that are reflected in the character of Jude and her mother are religious beliefs and moral virtues. In addition, this study uses the postcolonial concepts of Bhabha’s mimicry and hybridity, Hall’s cultural identity, William’s dominant, residual, and emergent culture, as well as Said’s orientalism to reveal and find representations of their cultural and identity when adapting and adopting American culture. Not to mention, they are also triggered by prejudice and discrimination against their ethnicity and religion as a Syrian Muslim and finally they experienced Islamophobia. The results of this study revealed that there are reflections of religious attitudes such as obedience to shari’ah and have moral virtues such as the behavior taught by the Prophet. In addition, they also acknowledged their multiple cultural and identity as Syrian-American.
