Abstract

This study aims to describe the structure of the novel as well as the elements of nativism and hybridity used in challenging the discourse of colonialism in the novel Setan van Oyot by Djokolelono. This research took place in the city of Jakarta start from March 2020 to August 2021. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method with the structural novel and theory of nativism from Frantz Fanon and hybridity from Homi K. Bhabha to show the practice of local culture and community identity in a postcolonial view. The results of the study indicate that the discourse of colonialism can be challenged with elements of nativism or an attempt to return to local cultural practices which are contained in aspects of inferiority, cultural subjects, and temporary strategies. In addition, the challenge continues with the element of hybridity in explaining the identity of a static colonial society through aspects of mimicry, ambivalence, and the discovery of a third space.
