Abstract

The Duke and I karya Julia Quinn. ********* The study aims to investigate how the female characters’ ignorance and innocence of marital acts are romanticized in The Duke and I written by Julia Quinn. Deploying Christopher Russel Reaske’s theory of Characters and Characterization and Mary Wollstonecraft’s theory of Liberal Feminism of Women Education, this study applied a descriptive analytical method to analyse the process and instance of how Daphne’s ignorance and innocence of sexual intercourse were glorified through the main female character, Daphne Bridgerton. The result of this study shows that the upbringing of Daphne as a woman in Regency England plays a big role in determining her standpoint as well as her conspicuous characteristics. Through the standpoint of female characters, it is clear that they had limitations on almost every aspect; social life, how to behave and think, and both formal and sexual education. Whilst the male characters’ standpoint shows no limitations nor restraints on the aspects mentioned. Therefore, as the results of the gap between the two sexes, women are known to be ignorant and innocent compared to the superior mind and behaviour of men. These ignorance and innocence characteristics of Daphne toward the sexual intercourse of marital acts are then considered as charming and lovely flaws to her husband, Simon and the society, as the two traits are seen as the attractive points from women described in the story.
