Abstract

************** In this study, how sexism contributes to postnatal depression in Cho Nam-Joo’s Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982 is investigated. Drawing from the model of sexism, Freud’s theory of Mourning and Melancholia, as well as feminist’s perspective of postnatal depression, this study applies descriptive qualitative interpretative approach to analyze how sexism could contribute to postnatal depression. The result of the study indicates that postnatal depression in Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982 was a grief response to the losses that are caused by sexism which deprives women of their selfhood and identity following childbirth.
